Lunchtime in SKC

A typical hot and humid afternoon and Shanmughan (our physics Lab assistant) opened one of the lab windows (which opens towards the ground) to allow in some fresh air. Allowing in some fresh air is one thing – watching the PDC girls go by towards Mattom centre is another. Intentions are clear and when done in pretext no one suspects. Mohandas sir, sitting at the end of the hall, didn’t pay much heed. I think he knew what was going on. Continuing with his gaze……... yawning and belching out (not in that order maybe but who cares) something far at the end of the ground caught his attention. He almost froze.

Scratching his head he tried to recollect where else had he seen an image like this. Was it in Sunday supplement of ‘Mathrubhumi’ or did he actually see it on TV (DISCOVERY)!?!?!? Lately, news about people in Somalia struggling for food and basic stuffs and whatnot had caught the attention of the world and the news was getting a lot of publicity. The sight he saw was probably more gruesome than the images that he had seen. It looked like there was a struggle(fight) going on and in-between the struggle he could occasionally hear a cry. There definitely seemed to be some casualties.

But anyways, our Shanmughan didn’t know how to react and what to do and before he could actually make up his mind, there was a gentle tap on his shoulder. It was Mohandas sir.

“Karyam aakanda, mmade pilleru aanu…. Bhakshannum kazhikkya.”

He never opened that window again.
